The Village Academy

The Village Academy is a group of town, city and village schools that have joined together to provide the very best education for the children in our care and where we believe that education is very much a matter of the individual.

The Creative Curriculum

At Selling we strive for successful, determined, imaginative learners and our rich and relevant curriculum is planned and delivered with our vision and values at its core.

Our main learning takes place through well thought out topics, which include trips and visitors to the school, theme days and themed weeks, in order to further enrich the children's experiences. Each class takes part in a number of topics throughout the year to encourage a broad range of experiences. All topics are mapped against the National Curriculum programmes of study and include well-planned opportunities to immerse the children in their learning. Topics act as an umbrella, under which children learn across different subjects. We have developed a vibrant curriculum with the skills of enquiry at its heart. Our foundation subjects are led by enquiry questions, often guided by the children, to direct the learning of each lesson. Carefully selected books are chosen to support and enhance each topic.

The school’s vision includes recognizing the talents of all children and we encourage children to identify their strengths and passions by exposing them to a range of learning experiences. Sporting opportunities and visiting workshops provide children with experiences beyond those that they may normally have, and promote engagement in a wider range of activities.

We feel that in order to be successful, global citizens, it is of vital importance that our children have a knowledge and understanding of foreign languages. In 2016, it became a legal requirement for all children in Key Stage 2 to learn a foreign language; at Selling School our chosen language is French. In addition to this we also have a chosen ‘Language of the Term’, which all classes in the school learn.

As a Church controlled school we aim to meet children’s needs in a caring, Christian environment. Children are taught Religious Education in line with the Kent Agreed Syllabus and guidelines from the Canterbury Diocesan Board of Education.

Personal and social development plays a significant part in our school, with dedicated lesson time focusing on this aspect of the children's education. A unique addition to our curriculum is the inclusion of first aid skills and awareness for all age-groups. As the children progress through the school they will learn more about hazards and safety, and ultimately will learn how to administer CPR, aid someone choking, and respond to injuries.

Extra-curricular opportunities are an important aspect of the school, with children able to choose from a wide range of after school clubs available across the year.
